Hey Ontarian,

Great questions. Wish I had great answers.

The rules for keywords when it comes to articles is the same as for video marketig, websites, blogs, etc. Pretty much the same game, just a different format. The problem is, first you have to know what exactly people are searching for. Then you usually need to find whch of those keywords has less competition. Unless you are really, really good at search engine marketing.

This requires research and keyword research is a whole topic all by itself. Two good services for that are Wordtracker.com and NicheBOT.com. I use NicheBOT.com that will access Wordtracker.com as well as other databases.

This may be more than you were asking for, so feel free to ask more specific questions.

You can also find out what people are searching for on forums (questions they ask) and what type of things are being discussed on blogs. You can find out what's happening on blogs at technorati.com.

Can be lot's of work.

Once you decide what to write about You want to write a title that uses the keyword and solves a problem. Something that makes a person want to read it. How to..., 10 tips to... Fastest way to...best,quick, etc.

Three MLM Leadership Traits Your Sponsor Does Not Have, But Should. (for example if you were trying for MLM Leadership)

Once common mistake to avoid.

In the past to rank well for MLM Leadership you would have that term several times in the article. Once in each paragraph for example. People are still doing this, but it will actually hurt you. Instead of repeating that term over and over, you want to use related terms.

And that could be more research ;)

But personally I would put FAR more effort in just writing and submitting the best articles you can write. Write the for people, not search engines. You'll attract fans that way and they won't care about keywords.

Below I have attatched some old research of 2 or 3 thousands keywords related to mlm. Could be a lot less. I may have provided a list I have cleaned up some. Didn't look to be honest.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

There isn't just one answer to your question. What kind of keywords to use depends:
1. on the subject your article is about
2. the audience you're writing for

If you're writing an article for example about the benefits of using soy candles, you would do a keyword search on candles, soy candles etc... and see what kind of keywords come up. You then use those keywords in your title and sprinkled naturally through out your article. Long-tail keywords (3 or more words ie. phrase) are a bit better to get ranking for.

To take it further, once you have your keywords picked out, go to Google and do a search for them and see if any articles come up on the first page using those keywords. If not you have a good chance of getting your article to rank on the first page...but there's no guarrantee of course.

For free keyword research I use: http://www.freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ and http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

I have just invested in a great software, because I intend to make article marketing the main pillar of my efforts. It's called article announcer. Pretty expensive. With the program comes 4 audio-tutorials, and this is their take on it: The headline is crucial when it comes to placing your keywords there. Then, there is a discussion out there that evolves around so-called keyword-density. What they are saying, is that different experts have different opinions on that, they suggest anything between 2 and 5 percent per article. Also, they are saying that the google-algorithms are constantly chaning anyway, so it's best to not even sweat it too much, and get a bit of everything out there. Have a mixed bag of articles, basically. What keywords? I guess that depends on who you are trying to attract, you can also use software like wordtracker to find out what keyword-combinations people are looking for. this can be useful, because let's say you work for herbalife, your article will be one of billions, like this you can see what other combinations your main keyword is being researched and kind of find yourself a "niche". Jason Potash also has a program out called content composer, which I don't own. Articles can also be written professionally by going to elance.com, it's not expensive, question is, do you want an inexpensive one, if you know what I mean. You'll be judged by your articles, of course and especially if you want to get published in ezines, they have to be really good.

Hey Mark,

That's probably the only "major player" in article submitting software that I have not tested. I would love to hear your thoughts about it after you have had a chance to play with it.

Thanks,

Jeff

totally. I could even send you a light version of it which is perfectly legal, because that's exactly why he invented it. normally it's designed to give to your ghostwriter so you can outsource the submission-process as well. with this light version there are no license-agreement issues and of course Jason P. does not want people to give his program away for free. the light version is called that for a reason. give me a day or maybe even today, if you want it, send me an email.

Ontarian,

Article marketing is very effective especially if you have the right headline and keywords so it will get read. One of the rules I try to follow to get to the buyers is a concept called "long-tail" key words. Typically, the more keywords the more specific the search. Below is an example:

Ask yourself: “Do I write keyword-rich article titles?”

Example 1: "Home Audio"

* This article title is too short to get any hooks
and the reader has to guess what your angle
to the topic will be about.

Example 2: "Home Audio and Electronics"

* This is better, yet it does not explain why
someone should read the article.

Example 3: "Home Audio and Video That Will Make Your Friends Envy You?"

* Now we have picked up a 2nd keyword, “video”
and a reason why to read the article.

Example 4: "Home Audio Components, Subwoofers and Tweeters-7 Tips to Amp Up Your Stereo"

* Here you see multiple high value keywords,
gave a reason to read the article and even
used a high value keyword as a verb, “Amp.”

Tip: Use a keyword tool such as GoodKeywords, Google Suggest, or Wordtracker to help identify keywords for your article titles.

Also, ask yourself this question: “Do the first 3 words of my article title introduce the topic of the article?”

(1) Start your article title with your article subject.

(2) Avoid starting with ‘junk words’ or conjunctions, such as “a” or “the.”

(3) It is acceptable to start your article title with a verb and then roll directly into a dense keyword relating to the subject of your article.

(4) Consider using two article topic hooks in your article
title.

Example: "Qigong Moves - 7 Tips To Improve Your Health Naturally With Spring Forest Qigong Techniques"

Topic hook #1 is “Qigong” or “Qigong Moves”
Topic hook #2 is “Improve Your Health Naturally” or “Spring Forest Qigong”

Imagine the possibilities when using two very narrow topical hooks to help your reader know what the benefit will be if they invest the time to read your article.

I hope this has added some value to the other great comments below!

Hey Ontarian,
Google uses a very complex system to determine page rank. There is no short or best answer to your question.Your page will rank very differently depending on what search term the Google user plugs in as a search term. Some of things you need to ask yourself are

1) Who is my target audience?
2) What kinds of products or services am I offering?
3) What are related products or services in my Niche?
4) What is the competition?

Ultimately, what the best Internet Marketers do is first find the Niche that does not have millions of competitors. Then you find the service and "fill the need". It's simple business. If there is an over supply and little demand why would you invest your time and effort and money? You need to ask yourself these things. I have built a successful online business by filling the needs of others. I always start my campaigns by looking for a need that isn't being filled very well. Then I find the product or service and it just happens. You could spend days and days doing keyword SEO research only to find by the time you fill the niche other more savy marketers have already filled the void.

The best bet is stick to what you know, find out if you can compete quickly (the internet is very trendy and what is HOT today could be gone tomorrow)

I used to spend a lot of time doing keywords hits clicks and analytics. For the most part is was a waste of time and this is an old school way of attempting to market online. In fact, MOST of what I have profited on I have not been able to even find in Google or most major search engines. Word of mouth is always the best bet.

Basically, just write a good article about something you know about and believe in. That will determine your tags and keywords and probably even your title. I like to check DIGG to see what the hottest topics are and go from there as far as trend research.

If your trying to rank as the number one page for "Internet Marketing" or "The Secret" or "Joe Schroeder" just stop now. It's all about content. Your never going to have as much relivant content as the guy who started writing articles on that same subject 15 years ago and is submitting them literally hundreds per day by getting affiliates to market his name product or website for him. It just won't happen.

IMHO keywords, hits, clicks and analytics is a waste of time. You could have made money while you were wasting time researching. Just go have fun and make friends. If you have a good product or service it will sell itself. If you enjoy writing articles, just write about things you know your an expert on. When you establish that degree of expertise people will be curious and find out what you are all about as well as your products or services and buy them from you.

BTW you could spend several thousand dollars paying to find the best ways to do SEO(Search Engine Optimization). Meanwhile you probably already have a Ning account and an autoresponder like awebber that you heard about right here in this room and you probably never googled either one. See my point?

Hope that helps, Good Luck

Scott, I agree whole-heartedly. When I see "branch-off" programs trying to teach you their "secrets" and want you to pay, it makes me crazy! I don't have the time or resources to learn multiple programs, etc. I just want to learn basic article writing, how to create a capture page so prospects can see what I'm all about, not what I'm trying to pitch. Thanks for your common sense approach.
